Hello, lovely bookworms!
This Top Books Tuesday I thought I’d mention books I’ve read that portray abuse and its many effects. Abuse in all of its forms – verbal, physical, sexual, psychological, negligence – is happening all over the world. Whether you are someone who’s been directly or indirectly affected by any type of aggression, abuse is something we should all be talking about. It has been around since the beginning of time and it is determined to stay, unless we do something about it. What can we do? We can educate ourselves on the subject, learn to identify the signs and lend a helping hand, raise awareness…
As readers, we are able to read, understand and place ourselves in the shoes of a character. Reading a story about a victim of abuse is a great way of learning what it’s like to be stuck in an aggressor’s toxic grip (of course, as long as the book does not romanticize or sensationalize) and may even help us recognize and become familiar with the patterns.
♥ The Breathing Series by Rebecca Donovan
“I knew there was going to be pain whether I did anything wrong or not – so maybe I should do something to actually deserve it.”
♥ Not After Everything by Michelle Levy
“It takes everything in me, but I don’t look back. I can’t. Not after everything.”
♥ Everything in Between by H.N. Smith
You can read my review here.
“Eli’s stories never included girls, just an abusive father, a willfully ignorant mother, and absent siblings.”
♥ Poison by Galt Neiderhoffer
You can read my review here.
“Something delicious simmers on the stove. The dishwasher murmurs. Laundry circles. The daily rotation of domestic life rolls on, as with any perfect machine, until a circuit breaks and the machine ceases to function.”
♥ Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson
“IT happened. There is no avoiding it, no forgetting. No running away, or flying, or burying, or hiding.”
♥ Dear Teddy by J.D. Stockholm
“I talk to Mr. Ted. He is my only friend. He understands when the bad man comes.”
